Devotional for 1.25.2012 - Matthew 12:43-45
“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”
(Matthew 12:43-45 ESV)
"We seldom get rid of an evil merely by understanding its causes...and for all our insight, obstinate habits do not disappear until replaced by other habits. " Carl G. Jung from The Practice of Psychotherapy
Why are spiritual disciplines such as prayer, study, and worship so important in our lives? One reason is because they help establish God-like patterns of behavior that pushes out ungodly things. Scripture tells us that we are like containers. What are you filling your container up with? If we are not intentionally filling ourselves with the things of God, then the things of this world will rush into that empty space and begin to take over our life. It is only by a daily draining of this world and filling of God can we overcome the worldly pressures and live in a God-honoring way.
